loftsatkennesawIn August of 2011 Ernst Concrete contracted with 2000 Concrete for the development of The Lofts of Kennesaw, a five story luxurious academic oriented student housing project.

This off campus student housing complex consists of 217 three and four bedroom units, offering private bedrooms and bathrooms with common area living and kitchen space. These units are rented fully furnished with utilities included.  Connected to the complex by a pedestrian bridge is a 5 story parking garage, and the ground floor of the main building houses a variety of retail establishments and restaurants.

The complex amenities include: an expansive 24-hour clubhouse, open green space, resort-style pool, state of the art fitness center, yoga/pilaties studio, sauna/steam room, game room, tanning beds, tennis/volleyball courts and a computer center with iMacs, PC’s and free printing.  Additionally, this complex is fully serviced by the KSU transit system with a bus service every 15 minutes, between 6:00am and 1:00pm.

This project consisted of 9,475 cubic yards of poured concrete, comprising of lean fill, slabs on grade, columns, spread footings, mat foundations, foundations, elevator pit bottom and walls, strip footings, shear walls, retaining walls, bridge plinth, and architectural retaining wall with color.  The add-mixtures included, Euclid’s non-chloride accelerator going through the winter months, mid-range for allowing greater slump range for placement and air chemicals for exterior concrete.  Solomon Color’s provided the liquid color Buckwheat, a rich earth tone for the architectural wall.  As the project was coming to a close the decision was made to change parking areas from asphalt to concrete and Ernst Concrete was awarded all site work.  All pre-cast beams for the five story parking deck were provided by Metro Mont with the entrance and bottom slab being poured concrete.

Some of the complexities of this projected included having to reinforce the sub grade with huge mat foundations to support the weight of the residential buildings plus the parking garage.  From the 2nd floor up this complex was constructed with wood framing, thus requiring the 2nd floor to be reinforced with double wood framing.  This was also the first time 2000 Concrete Structures had constructed an architectural wall.
